The New York Daily News has described the Harlem
Honeys and Bears as "seniors making waves, swimming against the tide of aging."
Founded in 1979, membership
has grown from 50 to more than 300 over nearly 30 years. Five days a week, you will find the Honeys and Bears perfecting their
synchronized and competitive swimming routines at the Hansborough Recreation Center from nine to noon. They then showcase
their skills at four equatic shows annually, one competition in New York City, and the Senior Games at the State University
of New York, Cortland, where they have won upwards of 70 medals.
Each year, members such as James Ford,
Luther Gales, Lettice Graham, Elvira Ogarro and Barbara Solomon win gold, silver and bronze medals in both swimming and track
and field.
Members who joined for fitness reasons report substantial health benefits. Some could barely work when
they first joined, but you'd never know it to see them now. Honeys in their mid 80s and Bears approaching their
70s are young at heart and look at age simply as a piece of data used simply to categorize people.
If you are
50+ and want to challenge yourself while making new friends, getting in shape, perfecting your strokes, and having a
lot of fun, join the Harlem Honeys and Bears.
